Derelict vessels in Florida’s waters often create local nuisance and environmental problems made more complex by private property rights, regulatory jurisdiction issues, and costs of removal. The reasons why vessels become derelict are wide-ranging from extreme weather events to owner neglect. But with Florida’s population continuing to grow at a fast pace, it is not surprising that as of 2020 there are more than 985,000 Florida registered vessels in our state. This CLE provides an overview of some of the typical environmental and nuisance problems caused by derelict vessels, a review of Florida’s derelict vessel law, and the typical challenges faced by local governments dealing with derelict vessels in local waters.
